sample - What is IELTS?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It is one of the most widely-recognized English tests. In the previous year it was estimated that more than 3 million candidates took the test.

Who designs the questions for IELTS?

IELTS is co-owned by IDP: IELTS Australia, British Council and Cambridge Assessment English. While IDP: IELTS Australia and British Council are responsible for hosting and implementing the test around the world, Cambridge English Language Assessment is in charge of designing and developing the questions for IELTS.

Why are there Academic and General Training modules in IELTS?

There are two modules of IELTS to cater to test-takers with different needs. Academic is for people applying for higher education or professional registration in an English speaking environment, whereas General Training is for those who are going to English speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs.

What is the test format for IELTS? How much time does it take to complete the test?

The IELTS test assesses your English abilities in Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11-14 minutes). The whole test should be completed within 3 hours. Listening, Reading and Writing are tested back-to-back in one morning, while the Speaking test might be scheduled on the same day or a different date.

Pros

Cons

While less than other English language tests, PTE is widely recognised by many governments, universities and organisations across the world.

Speaking component is taken in a room with other test takers which can be distracting for some participants

PTE is also offered in different formats for specific purposes such as study and migration

There is no option to take PTE on paper, meaning this test may be more difficult for test takers with low computer literacy

Highly accessible, PTE Home and Academic can be sat online

Limited test preparation materials: Compared to some other English language tests, there may be fewer test preparation materials available for the PTE, which could make it more difficult to prepare for the test and achieve a high score.
